Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Anacom approves DTT migration plan, pilot test for 27 November

Lisbon, Oct. 8, 2019 (Lusa) – Portugal’s National Communications Authority (Anacom) on Tuesday said that it has approved the DTT network migration development plan to release the 700 MHz band and the respective schedule to be met by Meo.
The telecommunications regulator, led by João Cadete de Matos, also told to Meo (Altice Portugal) to carry out a pilot test, on 27 November, which consists of changing the transmitter of Odivelas Centro, which will move from channel 56 to channel 35, they said.
The migration of the 700 MHz band of digital terrestrial television (DTT) is essential for the development of the fifth mobile generation (5G), which is expected to be launched next year.
After the change in the transmitter of Odivelas Centro, on 27 November, the changes in the other transmitters that make up the DTT network start between the third week of January and the first week of February 2020 and end on 30 June 2020, they said, recalling that the process starts in the south of the country and will end in the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira.
Anacom made the schedule more flexible, given the roadmap it had established, taking into account the concerns expressed by Meo, so it will be up to this company, which is responsible for the broadcasting and transport of the digital television signal, to set the schedule and pace of work, within the limits defined by the regulator.
By 15 November, Meo will have to send Anacom detailed planning of the alteration of the 240 transmitters that make up the DTT network, indicating the date on which each transmitting station will be altered, to enable the regulator to be able to develop the user support actions, promptly.
The alteration of the broadcasters, namely Odivelas Centro, on 27 November, will imply that people only must tune in to their television, using the command of the television or the box TDT (TDT decoder).
Anacom said that it will not be necessary to reorient the receiving antenna (the broadcasters will be in the same place), nor to change the television or the DTT decoder, nor will anyone have to subscribe to pay-TV services (TV packages), as everyone will be able to continue to watch free TV, as is the case now.
It was stressed that the only thing they must do if they get a black screen is to tune in to the TV or DTT decoder.
The regulator warned DTT customers to be vigilant and to denounce any attempts by third parties to induce them to purchase equipment or subscribe to pay-TV services with the fraudulent argument that this would be necessary for the view of the next frequency change of digital terrestrial TV.
Anacom's call centre will provide an extended personalised service, day and night, covering weekends and holidays.
If users are unable to tune their equipment, Anacom will ensure that support requests are solved by the technical teams that will travel all over the country, as Meo makes the changes to the transmitters.
