Lisbon, Sept. 13, 2019 (Lusa) – According to the Portuguese Society of Internal Medicine (SPMI), ten heads of the emergency team of the Garcia de Orta Hospital in Almada have resigned, with the hospital admitting the "possibility of dismissal".
"Today [Thursday], ten heads of the emergency team of the Garcia de Orta Hospital have resigned and many other internists working in the Emergency Department have resigned as a whole, in a letter sent to the board of directors," the SPMI said in a statement sent to the newsrooms.
Contacted by Lusa, the general secretary of the Independent Union of Physicians (SIM), Roque da Cunha, confirmed that the heads of the medical team have resigned because of insufficient human resources.
"The board of directors, in the person of the clinical director, immediately received the group and, at that meeting, the existing doubts were clarified and the commitment was made by the board to adopt possible measures at this time to help resolve the issues and situations raised," the note from the hospital said.
However, questioned by Lusa about the resignations, following information that reached Lusa, the hospital wrote that no service director of HGO (Hospital Garcia de Orta) resigned nor did the reply refer to the possibility of resignation.
In the reply sent at about 5.30 p.m. on Thursday, the hospital also announced that a new meeting would be scheduled for the first half of October.
The Portuguese Society of Internal Medicine added in its statement that the protest of the internists of Hospital Garcia de Orta is due to the decision of the board of directors to remove the General Surgery from the physical presence in the Emergency Service.
