Lusa - Business News - East Timor: Veteran journalists call on new generation to work for development

Dili, Aug. 23, 2019 (Lusa) – Two East Timor journalists who 20 years ago played a role in the process that led to its independence, on Friday called on the new generation of media professionals to actively work for the country’s development.
In an interview with Lusa to mark 20 years since the referendum that led to East Timor’s independence Leste, Rosa Garcia and Susana Cardoso said that it was important that the country has independent, critical journalists.
The two journalists, both now 45, came into the profession through student political activism as part of the struggle for independence.
"East Timor needs independent and critical journalists now," said Garcia. "Now we have independence, we are a sovereign nation, we have a constitution, we have money and everything. But the people have still not felt all this freedom, which only came to some people.“ Cardoso agreed, saying that the country needs journalism professionals who continue "to fight for the good of Timor" and who, she said, therefore "have to be activists" to an extent.
Demanding responsibility, better criteria and more and better work from journalists also requires better conditions and pay, Garcia said, citing low incomes as one of the biggest challenges.
The two began their careers as students, working on the only newspaper that existed at the end of the 1990s, Suara Timor Timur (STT), and in support of foreign journalists who sought information from East Timor.
The STT was founded by Salvador Ximenes Soares in 1992, the year that Xanana Gusmão, who was leading the fight against the Indonesian occupation, was captured.
At that time, activism and journalism merged, said Garcia: "It was a great challenge for me. I was a student activist, but my goal was to be a journalist, because I wanted to convey the information we had."
Garcia is now co-owner of the Timor Post newspaper.
"Being a journalist made it easier to talk to everyone,” she said. “But it was hard to be independent.
“I regret that I increased the number of victims in some cases, but I think I did it for good reason and God will forgive me," she added, referring to clashes with pro-Indonesia militias.
Cardoso took part in demonstrations at the National University (UNTIM), was arrested and ordered to report regularly to the police.
"But I preferred to be a journalist,” she recalled. “We'd cover everything, but without training. We learned to work and improve our capacities."
Activism and journalism were mixed: "I helped organise the demonstrations and then did the coverage," Cardoso recalled.
In 1999, the year in which Indonesia agreed to a referendum on independence, the challenge forced greater neutrality, "having to be a journalist, talking to the supporters of independence" and then "having to go talk to those for autonomy [within Indonesia], who made constant threats," recalled Cardoso.
Garcia told Lusa that the risks of being a journalist in those years was immense.
"I've survived, I think because of Our Lady of Fatima,” she said, referring to the shrine in Portugal. “I have had great devotion since then because I always took a little saint with me."
