Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: New maritime transport concession starts off with 13 trips

Praia, Aug. 16, 2019 (Lusa) - The new public service concession for maritime transport of passengers and cargo between the islands of Cabo Verde is to be launched on Friday, under the leadership of the Portuguese Transinsular company, which expects to run at least 13 trips in two weeks.
The public service concession, for 20 years, came into force on 15 August, a national holiday, so only on Friday will the first connections take place, under the new maritime transport model.
The information came from data compiled by Lusa based on the programming of the first two weeks of operation, released by the new company CV Interilhas and which initially includes the use of four ships.
According to the schedule, the ship "Inter Ilhas", owned by Polaris, will guarantee six connections between the islands of São Vicente and Santo Antão on Friday.
The ship "Liberdadi", from CV Fast Ferry, will make three trips, ensuring connections between the islands of Santiago, Boa Vista, Sal and São Vicente.
The ship "Kriola", also from CV Fast Ferry, will guarantee two trips, between the islands of Santiago (Praia), Fogo and Brava, while the "Praia D'Aguada", owned by the same company, will ensure two other connections, involving the islands of Santiago and Maio.
The new company that manages the public service concession, according to a tender launched at the end of 2018 by the Cape Verdean government, is led by the Portuguese company Transinsular, which holds a share of 51%. The remaining 49% is owned by Cape Verdean shipowners, who also supply ships to guarantee connections.
In February, after the ceremony to sign the concession contract in the city of Praia, the chairman of the board of directors of Transinsular said that maritime transport in Cabo Verde will have five ships, 15 fewer than the previous model (although the shipowners can maintain links outside the concession), with the concessionaire providing an initial investment of half a million euros.
The Cape Verdean opposition has been criticising this solution, accusing it of withdrawing service from national shipowners, while the prime minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, said that this model will change Cabo Verde.
The new concession will , in the opinion of the head of government, "provide the country with interlinked maritime connections in conditions of regularity, predictability, quality and safety.”
The new model will "allow people, businessmen, producers to plan their trips, their production because they know that when they have to travel and sell their products they know on what day they can do it," said Ulisses Correia e Silva.
