HINA - Repatriation of Bosnian nationals who fought in IS blocked

ZAGREB, Aug 16 (Hina) - The implementation of a plan for the repatriation of Bosnia and Herzegovina citizens who fought on the side of Islamic terrorist organisations in Syria and Iraq or stayed there as members of those fighters' families has been blocked because internal disputes in Bosnia and Herzegovina are preventing the establishment of a body that would coordinate and oversee that process, the Sarajevo-based daily "Dnevni avaz" said on Thursday.
The US authorities, which in February asked Bosnia and Herzegovina to take over its citizens captured as members of Islamic State forces, do not want to allow the repatriation of those people until the Bosnian government establishes an operative body that would run checks on potential repatriates to establish their exact identity and links with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
That body is expected to include representatives of the ministries of foreign affairs and security, prosecutorial authorities, and the Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA), and a few days ago the last attempt failed to agree on the wording of a decision that would define powers of individual institutions in charge of background checks and of organising the repatriation of Bosnia and Herzegovina nationals who are currently in some of the prisoner of war camps in Syria and Iraq.
Family members of captured former members of terrorist groups, mostly wives and children, are at the same time exerting strong pressure on Bosnia and Herzegovina authorities to expedite their repatriation.
So far, only Ibro Cufurovic of Velika Kladusa has been repatriated and he is currently in a prison in Zenica, awaiting trial on terrorism charges.
According to available information, at least 14 other former IS members are waiting to be deported to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Fifty-eight women and as many as 200 children are also waiting to be deported to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
According to figures provided by Bosnian security agencies, of the 40,000 fighters from 110 countries who have joined IS since 2012, 260 are from Bosnia and Herzegovina and 180 of them are men.
Around 70% of them have fought in IS ranks while the rest have fought in the rival terrorist group Al-Nusra.
