Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Sardine fisheries organisations to meet with Spain

Lisbon, Aug. 13, 2019 (Lusa) - The organisations representing the sardine fisheries of Portugal and Spain are to meet on Tuesday in Vigo, Spain, to call for the extension of catch possibilities to more than 20,000 tonnes this year, in line with the latest scientific results.
"The main objective of this meeting is to unite all efforts to ensure that the sardine fishing opportunities in 2019 are urgently adjusted, taking into account the very positive evolution of the sardine stock in 2018 and 2019 and the commitments made by the governments of Portugal and Spain to review the initial limit of 10,799 tonnes in light of the scientific data now released," according to a statement released on Friday by the National Association of Seine Fishery Organisations (ANOP-Cerco).
According to this scientific data, cited by the association, and considering the rule of exploitation that the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) said that it is appropriate to ensure the recovery and sustainability of the sardine resource, the quantity for the year 2019 is 20,438 tonnes, corresponding to about 6,800 tonnes in Spain and about 13,600 tonnes in Portugal.
However, this figure is below the figure pointed by ANOP-Cerco at the end of July (22,980 tonnes).
At the meeting, sardine producers in Spain and Portugal are to comment on the recent intention of the Portuguese government to increase the fishing possibility in 2019 to 13,500 tonnes, which has not yet obtained the necessary consensus for its formalisation.
This meeting will analyse the most recent documents associated with sardine fishing.
On 1 August, the government increased the sardine fishing quota by 25%, which will allow fishermen to catch another 4,000 tonnes this year and continue fishing until October, as recently announced by Portugal’s sea minister Ana Paula Vitorino.
