Lusa - Business News - Macau: VIP gambling specialist Suncity 'favourite to win future casino licence'

Macau, China, 23 May, 2019 (Lusa) – The Suncity group, the world's leading VIP gambling specialist, is the favourite to win the Macau casino operating licence that is expected to be put up for tender in 2022, according to the managing director of gambling services company 2NT8.
"It is possible that [the tender] will happen and they are probably the main candidate … not least because they are Chinese and this is an important criterion that the Macau government will take into account," Alidad Tash told Lusa on Thursday, the last day of the 13th Global Gaming Expo Asia (G2E Asia), which has been taking place in Macau.
The regional government has already announced its plan to launch a public tender, but without giving further details or saying how many licences it intends to allocate. At present there six companies operating casinos in Macau – three concessionaires and three sub-concessionaires, with half of them Chinese owned and the other half US-controlled.
"I think that no chief executive [of Macau] will want to have seven operators, four of which are American or foreign", Tash argued, explaining that "there is already pressure at government level" to ensure that casino operators are majority-owned by Chinese nationals.
On Wednesday, Suncity’s chief investment officer revealed in an interview with the Lusa that the group intends to bid for future gambling licenses in Macau.
"So far there have only been rumours – there is still no official comment [from the government] – but if there is any chance of participating in the public tender, we would love to enter the bidding," Andrew Lo told Lusa.
Suncity has around half of the VIP market in Macau, the world gambling capital, with 17 VIP lounges in the region giving it a presence in all casino operators there: Melco, MGM, Sociedade de Jogos de Macao, Galaxy and Wynn. It is also active in the VIP in South Korea, Philippines and Cambodia, taking high-spending gamblers on 'junkets' to casinos.
Tash described Suncity as "very aggressive" in expanding its business, citing recent investments in Russia, South Korea, Vietnam and also in Macau.
"All actors want to be filmmakers; all junket operators or those who manage small casinos want to be one of the great operators and owners of an integrated resort," he said, concluding rhetorically: “When will there be another opportunity like this, if not in Macau every 20 years?"
