ANSA -New excise taxes take effect, diesel fuel rises by 5 cents, gasoline drops

Diesel hike rapped by opposition which accused Meloni of hypocrisy

The government's controversial new excise taxes have taken effect, with diesel fuel rising by 5 cents and petrol dropping slightly.
The diesel duty hike has been slammed by the parliamentary opposition which has delighted in dredging up a pre-election video by Premier Giorgia Meloni mocking previous diesel excise tax rise and vowing to reverse them.
The new excise taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel went into effect on New Year's Day, set at €672.9 per thousand liters, with a €40.5 reduction for gasoline and a €40.5 increase for diesel.
The impact on pump prices, as expected, is approximately five cents per liter, including VAT: this is the amount of the increases (on diesel) and decreases (on gasoline) applied by major brands in their price lists starting yesterday.
It will take a few more days to see the effect of the new excise taxes on national average pump prices, due to the natural delay in reporting due to the holidays and the fact that the Ministry, by law, publishes data with a 24-hour delay.
As early as Monday, we should see gasoline prices averaging €1.63/liter, and diesel at €1.68/liter.
According to Staffetta Quotidiana's regular survey, on January 1st, Eni reduced its recommended gasoline prices by 4.9 cents per liter and increased diesel prices by five cents.
For IP, we've seen a five-cent drop in gasoline prices and a corresponding increase in diesel prices.

For Q8 and Tamoil, prices are down 5 cents on unleaded fuel and up 4.9 cents on diesel.
These are the average prices reported by operators to the Price Observatory of the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy and processed by Staffetta, recorded at 8:00 a.m.
