Inter coach Cristian Chivu said his side had to be resilient in the face of back luck and poor officiating after a soft penalty condemned them to a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at San Siro in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Dominik Szoboszlai converted a spot kick in the closing stages for the English champions after the VAR asked the referee to look at a tug on Florian Wirtz by Alessandro Bastoni.
"I rarely comment on refereeing decisions," Chivu told Sky television.
"The referee interpreted the situation well during the match.
"Then the VAR called the referee over.
"We have to accept it and fight against injustices and incidents.
"A draw would have been fair given the way things were going".
Inter still have a good chance of qualifying directly for the last 16 by finishing in the top eight of the league stage.
They are provisionally fifth with 12 points from six games ahead of Wednesday's matches.
Atalanta, meanwhile, moved up to third place with 13 points by coming from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1 in Bergamo thanks to goals by Gianluca Scamacca and Charles De Ketelaere.
