AS Roma are two points clear at the top of Serie A after beating promoted Cremonese 3-1 away on Sunday thanks to goals by Matias Soule, Evan Ferguson and Wesley.
Inter, who had shared the top spot before the weekend's action, dropped to fourth, three points behind Roma, after losing the derby 1-0 to AC Milan.
United States winger Christian Pulisic scored the decisive goal for Milan, who moved up to second, and Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan saved a Hakan Calhanoglu penalty.
Roma, who are aiming to win the fourth Serie A title and their first since 2001 under new boss Gian Piero Gasperini, have 27 points from 12 games.
Milan have 25 points, as do champions Napoli, who beat Atalanta 3-1 at home on Sunday, while Inter are one point further back.
