Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Governing parties propose 100% subsidy for parents of cancer children

Lisbon, Nov. 7, 2025 (Lusa) - The PSD and CDS-PP governing parties are proposing, as part of the next State Budget, to raise the reference remuneration for childcare allowance for children with oncological diseases to 100% and also to reinforce the use of generic medicines in outpatient clinics.

MPs from the two parties supporting the government presented these proposals at a press conference in parliament.

At the press conference, the parliamentary leader of the CDS-PP detailed the proposals of the two parties that make up the AD coalition in the area of Health and indicated that the increase from 65% to 100% is aimed at one of the parents accompanying the sick child.

This is "a measure of the utmost social justice and support for families with children suffering from oncological diseases", Paulo Núncio defended.

Regarding strengthening the use of generic medicines in outpatient clinics, these parties aim to “achieve a market share of at least 65%,” and the parliamentary leader of the CDS-PP noted that this is a “long-standing cause of the CDS and also of the PSD”.

In the field of health, PSD and CDS-PP also want to promote the award of new public-private partnership contracts, "whenever two criteria are met".

"Whenever they improve the quality of the health service and are advantageous to the public interest" in terms of "quality versus cost", explained Paulo Núncio.

Concerning palliative and long-term care, the centrist MP indicated that the two parties are also proposing an "in-depth analysis, taking into account three criteria: the daily cost of the patient, the increase in the minimum wage and the inflation rate".

"The aim is to provide more effective support for integrated palliative and long-term care units," said Paulo Núncio.

Another proposal within the scope of next year's State Budget aims to say that regular screenings for glaucoma and other eye diseases for users over the age of 60 or who fall into risk groups will be promoted by the National Health Service's primary health care centres.

In his statement, the CDS-PP leader also argued that the proposed State Budget for 2026 “is on the right track”, because it “brings economic growth, reduces taxes, has a strong social concern, points to a budget surplus for the third consecutive year, for the first time in the history of Portuguese democracy, and reduces public debt to below 90% of GDP for the first time since 2009”.

"It's a good budget in Portugal and anywhere in the world, but with the series of proposals from the PSD Parliamentary Group and the CDS Parliamentary Group, this budget will get even better," emphasised Paulo Núncio.
