TAP - Tunisia faces water shortage: Workshop to explore solutions on November 8–9

Tunis, Oct. 29, 2025 (TAP) – The first edition of a workshop titled “Water and Sustainability: Treatment Technologies and Strategies” will be held on November 8–9 in Hammamet, amid severe water stress in Tunisia, where per capita water resources have fallen below the scarcity threshold.

The event is organized by the Tunisian Desalination Association (ATD), in partnership with the Water Desalination and Treatment Laboratory at the School of Sciences of Tunis and the EcoChemistry Laboratory of the National Institute of Applied Sciences and Technology (INSAT).

The workshop aims to tackle the growing challenges linked to water resources, as data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources show that the availability of water per inhabitant has dropped below 400 cubic meters per year, well under the critical scarcity level of 500 cubic meters. This decline is mainly attributed to climate change and the increasing frequency of droughts.

Discussions will focus on several key areas, including water desalination and lowering its energy cost through renewable energy, reuse of treated wastewater in irrigation and industry within a circular economy framework, as well as water governance and sustainable resource management policies at national and local levels.

The workshop will bring together experts, researchers, and engineers from universities, public and private institutions, as well as representatives of government bodies and international organizations involved in the water and environmental sectors.
