ALGIERS- The Delegation of the European Union in Algeria and the World Food Programme (WFP) on Tuesday praised Algeria's role in meeting the needs of Sahrawi refugees in the Tindouf camps.
"For more than 50 years, Algeria has shown exemplary generosity in welcoming Sahrawi refugees, and for nearly 40 years the WFP has been working alongside it, providing vital food and nutritional assistance," WPF Representative and Country Director in Algeria, Aline Rumonge, said at an event held to reaffirm the commitment of the EU Delegation in Algeria to Sahrawi refugees by continuing its funding to the UN agency.
She added that 80% of Sahrawi refugees are entirely dependent on humanitarian aid, commending EU's unwavering support and its commitment to this population.
Rumonge noted that their "strong and reliable partnership provides the sustainable funding needed to deliver vital assistance while improving the efficiency of WFP operations in the camps."
EU Ambassador to Algeria Diego Mellado Pascua emphasised Algeria's generosity towards Sahrawi refugees over the past several years while pointing out that a few weeks ago the EU sent the European contribution of around five million dollars -for the second year of the multi-annual partnership- to reiterate Europeans' commitment to the Sahrawi people.
The chairperson of the Red Crescent of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), Yahia Bouhbini, told APS that the event was an opportunity to call on donors to make contributions to help Sahrawi refugees.
