HINA - Ornithological camp set up at Učka to monitor autumn bird migration and ring birds

ZAGREB, 21 Aug (Hina) - The BIOM Association, in collaboration with the Učka Nature Park Public Institution, is organising its annual Ornithological Camp at the Učka Nature Park, bringing together ornithologists and volunteers to monitor autumn bird migration and ring birds as part of long-term migration research.

Bird ringing at Učka has been taking place since 2006 during the autumn migration period. This year, the camp is running from 18 August to 7 September, BIOM and the Park reported on Wednesday.

Volunteers from both Croatia and abroad are taking part in the camp.

Their mission includes studying bird migration patterns, assessing the importance of local habitats as stopover sites, and identifying the composition of local bird species.

As BIOM and the Učka Nature Park explain, birds migrate southwards in autumn to areas where they can find sufficient food during the winter, and return in spring to breed.

According to Dominik Spevec from BIOM, the most commonly ringed birds in previous years at the Učka Nature Park camp include the blackbird, robin, chiffchaff, blue tit, great tit, and Eurasian blackcap.

The Ornithological Camp invites all members of the public to attend the Open Day on 27 August, where they will have the opportunity to observe and take part in bird research and ringing activities.
