Amanda Knox, the American former Perugia exchange student wrongly accused of murdering British flatmate Meredith Kercher, is now taking back her story and telling her version in a TV miniseries.
'The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox' will debut on Hulu (in Italy on Disney+) from August 20 and is based on her autobiography, 'Waiting to be Heard: A Memoir by Amanda Knox,' published in 2013.
Grace Van Patten (Nine Perfect Strangers, Tell Me Lies) stars alongside Sharon Horgan as Amanda's mother Edda Mellas, John Hoogenakker as her father, Kurt Knox, Francesco Acquaroli as Giuliano Mignini, the prosecutor of Perugia, Giuseppe De Domenico as her then boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, and Roberta Mattei as Monica Napoleoni, head of the homicide division of the Perugia flying squad and Mignini's right-hand woman.
"I thought I knew more than I actually did," Van Patten said during a press conference about the Knox case, "but the more I researched, watched, read, and especially talked to her (Amanda), I couldn't believe how much I didn't know.
"So, it was really amazing, but also heartbreaking and frustrating to learn all the things you don't know." And regarding telling Amanda's story, "I thought it was really great to give her the opportunity to reclaim her story and tell her side of the story.
"I think the show does a great job of emphasizing that with all the characters and people from different walks of life, careers, and points of view.
"Everyone thinks they're doing the right thing, but seeing how it all goes wrong...
that's the heartbreaking part because a lot of those things shouldn't have happened.
"I wanted to show what she went through.
Everyone knows what happened, but no one knows how she felt." Also surprising was the fact that Knox came to feel pity for the prosecutors, the people who wanted her in jail.
"It was a really beautiful thing," the actress continues, "and it's really Amanda's nature—she doesn't take it out on anyone. I learned so much from her, from her mentality and her ability to stay positive, hopeful, and forgiving.
"Maybe that's why she was able to move on, not hold grudges, and accept that everyone was doing their job." The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox is produced by 20th Television in association with The Littlefield Company.
KJ Steinberg (This Is Us) is creator and executive producer.
Executive producers also include Warren Littlefield, Lisa Harrison, Ann Johnson & Graham Littlefield (The Littlefield Company), Monica Lewinsky (Alt Ending Productions), Amanda Knox & Chris Robinson (Knox Robinson Productions), and Michael Uppendahl, who also directs.
Van Patten also expressed admiration for Lewinsky, who has also been subjected to similar prurient scrutiny as the once-tabloid dubbed "Foxy Knoxy (actually her soccer nickname), but for well-known reasons, due to her relationship with Bill Clinton, both from the press and public opinion.
"Both Monica and Amanda," she explained, "were a great inspiration to me, the way they emerged from being scrutinized and slandered, yet they're not afraid of being part of the media system.
"They're truly strong, and I'm sorry they went through what they did at such a young age." Know and Sollecito were initially convicted of murdering Kercher and spent several years in Italians jails but later cleared by the high court after the conviction was found to be unsafe.
An Ivorian man, Rudy Guede, recently completed a 16-year sentence for murdering the London-born exchange student on November 1-2, 2007.
Knox, 38, is now a journalist and writer, and activist against judicial malpractice and wrongful convictions.
