ANSA - Folk music rocks Italy Pavilion with bagpipes and shawm

Folk Orchestra of Abruzzo, Lazio, Molise National Park performs

The music of the Folk Orchestra of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park is making the public dance at Expo 2025 Osaka during the week dedicated to the Molise region.
A concert of traditional folk music from this area of Italy has been scheduled every day over the course of the week in front of the Italy Pavilion.
The Folk Orchestra set to star at the universal exhibition includes Antonello Iannotta (tambourine), Luca Casbarro (zampogna, or Italian bagpipes), Daniele Romano (shawm) and Ernest Carracillo (accordion).
"We are a quartet today, but the Folk Orchestra can vary and include many more people", said Iannotta, explaining that "the peculiarity of this ensemble is to give new popularity to traditional musical instruments from Abruzzo, Molise and Lazio".
The quartet performing at Expo 2025 Osaka represents the "core" of the ensemble "with the typical instruments of our culture".
The zampogna (Italian bagpipes) is a classic of the area represented by the orchestra.
The shawm usually accompanies the zampogna "although we have used it in a slightly different manner compared to its traditional" role, added Iannotta.
The quartet is completed by a tambourine and an accordion, another typical musical instrument, especially in Abruzzo.

Born to mark the 100th anniversary of the Park, in 2022, the Orchestra focuses on these three regions' repertoire, seeking to revisit local folk music by highlighting the special quality of its musical instruments.
"Seeing people become passionate about a zampogna, a shawm, an accordion, a tambourine always gives us pleasure, especially overseas", also noted Iannotta.
"It's wonderful to be able to perform in another part of the world - something that would have been inconceivable with these instruments in the past", he concluded.
