HINA - Ceremony held to mark 100th anniversary of Zagreb Zoo

ZAGREB, 28 June (Hina) - The Zagreb Zoo  held a celebration to mark its 100th anniversary, an event attended by numerous high-ranking officials, and as part of the celebration, a newly renovated enclosure for griffon vultures was opened, which will now house a new bird species, the northern bald ibis.

"Today we are celebrating not only a century of the Zoo’s existence, but also its growth into a scientific, educational and infrastructural centre of excellence. From three foxes and two owls to more than 7,000 individuals from nearly 400 different species, it’s a remarkable journey that reflects the vision and dedication of generations of staff," said Mayor Tomislav Tomašević.

The mayor emphasised that the Zoo has become the most visited attraction in Zagreb, and ranks among the most visited in the whole of Croatia, alongside the national parks.

"This is not a place that lives off nostalgia, it is constantly evolving, educating, and participating in international projects," he added.

Environment Protection Minister Marija Vučković highlighted the importance of the location of the Zagreb Zoo.

"The Zoo and Maksimir Forest Park represent the first protected areas of their kind in a region much wider than just Croatia. This proves how long we have recognised the value of natural and biological diversity," she said.

She added that the Ministry remains firmly committed to supporting the Zagreb Zoo, emphasising that cooperation extends beyond co-financing and programme development, to include joint educational activities and consistent participation in various projects.

The Director of the Zoo, Ivan Cizelj, reiterated the Zoo’s crucial role in education, biodiversity conservation and the implementation of EU projects.

"Over the past 20 years, thousands have taken part in our educational programmes. Today we have two dedicated educational centres and numerous internationally awarded projects," said Cizelj.

The centenary celebration also included the announcement of new investments – most notably, the construction of an enclosure for the Eurasian lynx, valued at €1.3 million.

The Zoo currently employs 121 people and is open every day of the year.

"It’s open on Christmas, Easter, New Year’s Day, every single day, for all visitors, whether from Zagreb, the rest of Croatia or abroad. That makes it a true symbol of accessibility and dedication," said Mayor Tomašević.
