Fabio Capello said Monday that Claudio Ranieri would be the right man to take over Italy after Luciano Spalletti was sacked following Friday's 3-0 defeat in Norway in Italy's first 2026 World Cup qualifier.
Ranieri is the favourite to become the new head coach of the national team after his latest of his many feats - coming in at AS Roma in November and turning them around following a dire start to the season to qualify for next season's Europa League.
"It's the right name," former AC Milan, Roma, Real Madrid and England boss Capello told Rai radio.
"He took over Roma when they weren't doing well and he performed a miracle.
"Ranieri is an experienced man, who knows all the players in the national team and is capable of getting into their heads.
"I think he is the most suitable person to manage the national team, due to his experience and charisma.
"The national team coach is type of another job.
You have to try to find the best players and create team spirit.
"Ranieri is capable of this".
