HINA - Greenpeace: Croatia can transition to 100% renewable electricity by 2030

ZAGREB, 6 June (Hina) - The Greenpeace study "00% Renewable by 2030 - A Plan for the Croatian Electricity Sector" was presented on Thursday, World Environment Day, and was prepared by an expert team led by Goran Krajačić from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture in Zagreb.

The study shows that the ambitious goal for Croatia to generate all its electricity from renewables by 2030 is entirely achievable, primarily by shifting towards solar and wind energy, along with investments in the transmission grid.

Under this scenario, the installed capacity of solar power plants would rise to 5 GW, and wind farms to a total of 4.2 GW.

Examples from neighbouring countries demonstrate that it is possible to install even greater renewable energy capacities than those proposed in the study for Croatia. In the past five years, Greece has installed as much as 7 GW of solar power, and Hungary 5.5 GW.

By comparison, Croatia has only just reached a total of 1 GW of installed solar capacity, despite ranking among the top European countries in terms of solar potential, said Krajačić.
