With the war in Iran, Italy faces an energy bill of nearly €12 billion euro, think tank CNA said Monday.
    Between March 1 and August 31, the increased outlay for fuel, electricity, and gas is estimated at approximately €11.6 billion compared to pre-crisis levels.
    This cost weighs on families and businesses, more than half of which is attributable to mobility.
    The CNA estimates the increased cost of gasoline and diesel fuel over the six-month period at approximately €5.8 billion.
    July data confirm strong demand for gasoline, which reached 900,000 tons, the highest level in sixteen years and 3.1% higher than the same month in 2025.
    Diesel fuel, on the other hand, fell 8.4%.
    In July, average prices stood at €1.908 per liter for gasoline and €2.027 for diesel.
    The reduction in diesel consumption thus mitigated the cost, but was unable to offset the price increase.
    The fuel component alone accounts for approximately half of the increased energy costs estimated by CNA.
    Electricity bills are also high.
    The increased accumulated outlay for the six-month period is estimated at €3.7-3.8 billion.
    The data also show that the price shock was not accompanied by a contraction in demand.
    In July, Italy's electricity demand reached an all-time high for the month, 32.5 TWh, an 8.3% increase compared to July 2025.
    And tensions have not yet subsided.
    The latest prices available on the electricity market continue to show very high values even in the second half of August.
    Completing the bill is gas consumed directly by households and businesses, for which the CNA estimates an increased cost of around €2-2.2 billion.
