Cortina d'Ampezzo is cracking down on "loutish" tourism by banning bivouacs, packed lunches on steps, and inappropriate clothing.
As reported by Il Messaggero, Il Gazzettino, and Corriere del Veneto, until October 15th, in the center of the Jewel of the Dolomites, it will be forbidden to lie down on the steps of monuments, in parking lots, on the street, or on the doorsteps of buildings, according to an ordinance issued by Mayor Gianlua Lorenzi Thursday.
Sleeping bags are prohibited, even on benches, and food and drinks are prohibited on public streets or under porticoes, and washing on the streets will also be prohibited.
Visitors will also have to be careful about how they dress, and avoid attire deemed contrary to public decorum.
For those who violate the rules, fines range from €25 to €500.
Mayor Lorenzi observed in an interview with the Gazzettino that residents "find themselves embarrassed, at certain times, in certain situations.
They are already inundated with a heavy influx of tourists: at least the rules should be respected." The mayor said he thought an ordinance shouldn't have been necessary to "prevent camping in the city center, bivouacking in front of the cemetery, or eating on church steps.
Instead," he stated, "we were forced to take this action, so as to allow our local police and other law enforcement agencies to intervene." The same battle against rough-and-ready tourists continues in Venice, where Mayor Simone Venturini says he is ready "to further tighten controls on decorum, commerce, and anything that could compromise the quality and image of the city." Diving, picnicking, and napping on towels and lilos in St.
Mark's Square will no longer be tolerated.
"Venice cannot be used as a stage for those seeking a few minutes of visibility by displaying irresponsible, disrespectful, or stupid behavior," Venturini adds.
"The local administration and police are fully committed, and the sanctions are being enforced."
