ALGIERS - The working and friendship visit undertaken by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to Algeria on Monday marked an important step in strengthening bilateral relations in all their dimensions.
During the visit, President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune extended an official welcome to Algeria's guest at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic, before holding a one-on-one meeting that was later expanded to the delegations of both countries.
In a joint statement with the Spanish Prime Minister, the President of the Republic emphasized that Sanchez's visit to Algeria represents "a pivotal moment reflecting the political determination of both friendly countties to advance a mutually beneficial partnership," noting that it also serves as "an important preparatory step ahead of the 8th session of the Algerian-Spanish High-Level Meeting scheduled for next October."
The President of the Republic praised the Spanish authorities for their responsiveness to Algeria's efforts to recover looted assets, confirming that "satisfactory results" have been achieved in this priority dossier.
President Tebboune extended his congratulations to the government and people of Spain on their national football team winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup following their victory over Argentina on Sunday, calling it a "truly deserved win given the high standard achieved by Spanish athletes."
Following a luncheon hosted in honor of the Spanish delegation, the President Tebboune joined his guest in celebrating Spain's World Cup victory.
For his part, Sanchez, speaking on behalf of the Spanish government and people, extended his sincere condolences over the victims of the fire at the Assisted Childhood Institution in El Mohammadia, Algiers.
Regarding bilateral relations, the Spanish Prime Minister described Algeria as a "strategic partner and dear friend," emphasizing that this friendship is rooted in the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation, which serves as "a solid foundation for continuing to build exceptional bilateral relations."
He outlined the current, shared priorities between Spain and Algeria, under President Tebboune, underscoring the vital importance of "strengthening political dialogue between both sides as the bedrock upon which all other areas of cooperation are constructed."
Building on this, Sanchez reaffirmed Spain's firm commitment to "deepening ties of friendship with Algeria and expanding bilateral cooperation to serve the future of both countries."
As part of the visit, the President of the Republic received Spanish corporate leaders in several sectors, during which discussions focused on strengthening partnership prospects between Algerian companies and their Spanish counterparts. The Spanish corporate leaders expressed interest in the promising investment opportunities offered by Algeria.
Additionally, Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs Ahmed Attaf held talks at the Presidency of the Republic with his Spanish counterpart, Jose Manuel Albares, in the presence of Algeria's Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain, Abdelfetah Daghmoum.
Minister of State, Minister of Energy and Mines Mohamed Arkab held discussions with Spain's Third Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Sara Aagesen Munoz.
