APS - US Embassy highlights depth of diplomatic relations with Algeria

ALGIERS - The United States Embassy in Algiers highlighted that diplomatic relations with Algeria span over two centuries, noting that 1797 marked the arrival of the first resident US envoy to Algeria, a step representing one of the early beginnings of U.S. diplomatic activity in the Mediterranean region.

In a post on its official social media accounts, the embassy explained that " in 1797, the first American resident envoy arrived in Algiers. Richard O’Brien, the first American diplomat in Algeria, was appointed by President John Adams."

The embassy added that this step constituted "a powerful moment in early U.S. diplomacy and Mediterranean history."

It further noted that "for over two centuries, American envoys have been present in Algiers, showing just how important this relationship has been since the very beginning."
