HINA - Actor John Malkovich granted Croatian citizenship

ZAGREB, 6 May (Hina) - American actor of Croatian descent John Malkovich was granted Croatian citizenship, Interior Minister Davor Božinović said.

“In a brief but important ceremony today, we presented the citizenship decision to John Malkovich. The world-renowned actor, known for numerous notable film roles, has taken on a new role and become a Croatian citizen,” Božinović wrote on X, welcoming him.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković received Malkovich at government headquarters, saying he was pleased the actor maintains his Croatian roots.

Malkovich is one of the most acclaimed American actors, with more than 70 film roles, including The Killing Fields, Empire of the Sun, Dangerous Liaisons, In the Line of Fire and Being John Malkovich. He is also widely known for his theatre work, and has been nominated twice for an Academy Award and three times for a Golden Globe.

His great-grandparents emigrated to the United States from Ozalj. He has visited Croatia on several occasions, both privately and for theatre performances.
