ATA - Cyclops cave, Himara: A must-see prehistoric monument

TIRANA, May 5/ATA/ Spile Cave in Himara, a standout feature of the Albanian coast, has been revitalized to enhance its year-round tourism appeal.

According to Homer’s Odyssey, this is the legendary cave where Odysseus met the Cyclops, Polyphemus. Known simply as the Cave of the Cyclops, it marks the spot of their fateful encounter 2,700 years ago.

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports Blendi Gonxhja visited this cave which carries an important cultural and tourist potential for the area.

Following a meticulous intervention, the cave is now protected and interpreted, offering a unique visitor experience that preserves its natural and historical integrity. Enhanced lighting highlights the cave's distinctive features at night, transforming it into a Riviera landmark, while the revitalized, welcoming space at the entrance completes the experience.

This project links Himara's natural wonders—including beaches and mountains—with its historic heritage, designing a complete, authentic tourist route.

This project—jointly managed by the Albanian Development Fund and the National Institute of Cultural Heritage with funding from the World Bank—was designed by CHwB Albania and is monitored by the Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage Vlora.
