ATA - Durrës Archaeological Museum expands educational programs for youth

TIRANA, May 3 /ATA/ The Archaeological Museum of Durrës has been fully restored and completely reimagined thanks to the European Union’s EU4Culture program, following the damage it sustained in the 2019 earthquake.

In this museum, the public will be able to view more than 3,200 artifacts, organized into new thematic pavilions according to historical periods. Modern technologies have been integrated for interpretation and interactive experiences, allowing visitors to journey back to the time of Queen Teuta.

Previous infrastructural issues have also been addressed, such as accessibility (elevators that were previously out of service), the layout of spaces (upper floors once converted into storage), the safety and stability of the building, as well as the problem of missing information about the artifacts.

The museum collection is structured for continuous updates with new findings. The artefact ‘The Beauty of Durrës’ has been returned to exhibition. The staff of the Durrës Museum Center has increased from 17 to 33 employees, including restorers, archaeologists, and guides.

The Archaeological Museum of Durrës, originally opened in March 1951, has been conceived as a dynamic educational venue, offering programs for young people, children, and academic partnerships. Following its inauguration, the museum will grant free admission to all visitors for a period of 15 days.
