ZAGREB, 22 April (Hina) - The Croatian Coral Centre Zlarin has won the 2026 European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award in the category of citizens' engagement and awareness-raising, the Šibenik Fortress of Culture public institution said.
The European Commission and Europa Nostra have announced the winners of the 2026 European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards, co-funded by the Creative Europe programme, given this year to 30 projects and individuals from 18 countries.
Run by Fortress of Culture Šibenik, the Croatian Coral Centre Zlarin showcases the island’s coral heritage through exhibitions, educational programmes and cultural events, and is open year-round.
The jury noted that the Centre’s focus on coral heritage was based on thorough research into island traditions and that its work was effectively communicated to the public. It also highlighted the impressive impact for such a small island community, as the Centre operates year-round and supports sustainable local development.
Centre manager Katarina Gregov said the award was major recognition that the centre’s work resonated beyond the local community, especially in citizen engagement and community involvement.
She added it reflected three years of work since opening and underlined the importance of such institutions in smaller communities for heritage preservation and development.
This year’s winners were selected by a 10-member jury from 261 eligible applications across 40 countries. The awards will be presented on 28 May at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre in Cyprus.
