ZAGREB, 17 March (Hina) - Tonći Gaćina’s documentary film "Koze!" (Goats) has been selected for the competitive programme of Movies that Matter, the leading international human rights film festival, which will hold its 20th edition from 20–28 March in The Hague.
The film explores a disturbing case of goats culled on the islet of Unije in 2022, after they had been abandoned following a failed attempt to revive livestock farming on the island dating back to the 1980s.
According to the director, similar incidents occur with goats on Mljet and Lošinj, cows in Opuzen, and mongooses on Čiovo and Mljet - all introduced into the environment either as attempts to solve other problems or simply abandoned. “Today, our society has found only one solution: take up arms and cull them - rationally, measuredly, bureaucratically,” he said.
The film premiered globally in 2025 at the 78th Locarno Film Festival.
Gaćina's previous graduation documentary, "Turizam!" (Tourism), also achieved festival success, screening among ten titles in the Future Frames programme at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2016.
