Atalanta saved Italy from the embarrassment of having no teams in the Champions League last-16 by beating Borussia Dortmund 4-1 in Bergamo on Wednesday to progress from the playoffs 4-3 on aggregate thanks to a remarkable and dramatic comeback.
Juventus, however, are out despite a valiant attempt to reverse the 5-2 deficit from their first leg against Galatasaray with only 10 men after defender Lloyd Kelly was sent off for dangerous play at the start of the second half.
Needing to reverse last week's 2-0 defeat in Dortmund, Atalanta came out shooting and levelled the tie in the first half thanks to goals by Gianluca Scamacca and Davide Zappacosta.
A score by Mario Pasalic put them in command only for Dortmund's Karim Adeyemi to score an equalizer that looked to have forced extra time.
Instead Lazar Samardzic converted a penalty with the last kick of the game after Dortmund's Ramy Bensebaini kicked Nikola Krstovic in the face in the penalty area while clearing the ball.
In Turin Manuel Locatelli started Juve's fightback in the first half and the hosts managed to level the tie after the break despite Kelly's red card with goals by Federico Gatti Weston McKennie.
But the twice European champions ran out of gas in injury time after playing with a man down for so long, and Victor Osimhen and Baris Yilmaz scored twice to cut the deficit in the night to 3-2 and sent the Turkish team through 7-5 on aggregate.
Serie A leaders Inter are also out after losing 2-1 to Bodo/Glimt at San Siro on Tuesday to crash out at the playoffs stage 5-2 on aggregate.
Italy's other team in the competition, Serie A champions Napoli, failed to make it through the league stage.
