ALGIERS – The Speaker of the Council of the Nation (the Upper House of Parliament), Azzouz Nasri, chaired on Tuesday the opening ceremony of a parliamentary day themed "the Transplantation of Human Organs: Religious, Legal, and Medical Dimensions."

The opening ceremony was held in the presence of the President of the Constitutional Court, Leïla Aslaoui, the Speaker of the People’s National Assembly, Brahim Boughali, and the Minister of Relations with the Parliament, Nadjiba Djilali, as well as several representatives of national institutions and organizations.

During the event, Nasri called to "intensify joint efforts in order to clarify the ambiguities surrounding human organ transplantation in Algeria," within the framework of "a unified approach based on respect for human rights."

He emphasized that these efforts will enable "the establishment of a rigorous legal framework and precise, strict medical standards, similar to the regulations governing blood collection and storage centers."

In this regard, he highlighted that "the rapid advancement of medical sciences pushed national and international legislation to regulate this field through judicious legal rules, with the aim of balancing therapeutic necessity with the prevention of any abuse or excess that could undermine human values or pave the way for the illicit exploitation of human bodies."

Regarding Algeria, the Speaker of the Upper House recalled that "the legitimacy of human organ transplantation is based on the constitutional principle that grants the state the duty to preserve the life and physical integrity of the citizens," adding that "authorizing such transplantation constitutes a legal and legitimate practice, regulated by law and subject to strict monitoring."
