أعرب وزير الخارجية اليوناني بالإنابة، يورجوس كاتروغالوس عن وجهة نظره بأنه ينبغي أن يكون هناك إعداد جيد للمفاوضات بشأن قبرص كي يتم تقديم فرص أكبر للنجاح. وقال إنه لا يعتقد أن الوقت كاف لوضع شروط استئناف المفاوضات قبل نهاية كانون الأول / ديسمبر.

في مقابلة له مع صحيفة "أخبار اليونان" قبل زيارته للولايات المتحدة، قال كاتروغالوس سيكون من المفيد أن تتمكن الأطراف من التواصل بصورة غير رسمية لإعداد أفضل للجهود المبذولة.

سيجتمع وزير الخارجية اليوناني بالإنابة في نيويورك يوم الأربعاء، 12 كانون الأول / ديسمبر مع مبعوث الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة حول قبرص جين هول لوت، قبل وصولها إلى قبرص للاجتماع مع الزعيمين لاستكشاف إمكانية استئناف المحادثات .

كانت لوت خلال زيارتها الأخيرة لقبرص في نهاية تشرين الأول / أكتوبر قد طلبت من الزعيمين الاتفاق على شروط استئناف المفاوضات كنقطة انطلاق من أجل التوصل إلى نتيجة تفاوضية للقضية القبرصية".

وقال المتحدث باسم الحكومة برودروموس برودرومو أن الشروط ستكون مرتبطة بالمفاوضات، سواء في الإجراءات أو أثناء عملية المفاوضات.

ورداً على سؤال حول ما إذا كان يرى أنه من الواقعي التوصل إلى اتفاق بحلول نهاية العام حول الشروط، أجاب كتروغالوس: "نريد أن يكون الاستعداد جيداً لهذه المفاوضات، وأن نحظى بفرص جيدة للنجاح. سنبذل قصارى جهدنا لتحقيق هذه الغاية، رغم أنني لا أعتقد أن هناك ما يكفي من الوقت لوضع الشروط بنهاية كانون الأول / ديسمبر. "

وقال كاترغالوس إنه سيكون من المفيد أن تشارك الأطراف في اتصالات غير رسمية لإعداد أفضل مجهود.

وذكّر بالاجتماع المقبل - في المستقبل القريب جداً - بين رئيس الوزراء اليوناني والرئيس التركي طيب أردوغان في السياق الذي يمكن أيضاً مناقشة هذه القضايا.

وعلق كاتروغالوس على المحادثات بشأن الضمانات في قبرص من قبل حلف شمال الأطلسي وعما إذا كانت الحكومة اليونانية ستقبلها، قال كاترغالوس: "موقفنا الثابت منذ فترة طويلة حول الحاجة إلى إلغاء نظام الضمانات الذي عفا عنه الزمن وعلى انسحاب قوات الاحتلال لم يتغير". وأضاف أن هذا الموقف تم الترويج له بوضوح في محادثات كران مونتانا، وسوف يستمر. "يجب أن يستند أي هيكل أمني لقبرص الموحدة على قرار مجلس الأمن التابع للأمم المتحدة، وأن يكون للمنظمة الدولية دوراً نشطاً فيه وأن المسائل المتعلقة بالعلاقة بين جمهورية قبرص وحلف شمال الأطلسي (الناتو) هو متعلق حصرياً بالسياسة القبرصية".

تجدر الإشارة إلى أنه تم تقسيم قبرص منذ عام 1974، عندما غزتها تركيا واحتلت الثلث الشمالي من الجزيرة. فشلت حتى الآن جميع الجولات المتكررة لمحادثات السلام التي ترعاها الأمم المتحدة في التوصل الى حل يعيد توحيد الجزيرة. كانت الجولة الأخيرة من المفاوضات قد تمت تموز / يوليو 2017 في منتجع كران مونتانا في سويسرا.
