Lusa - Business News - Angola: Abu Dhabi Ports invests up to €384M in Luanda port

Luanda,April.23,2024(Lusa)- The Abu Dhabi Ports (AD Ports) group is going to invest $410 million over the next 20 years to operate the Porto of Luanda, with around half of this earmarked for modernising the multipurpose terminal operated by Unicargas.
The agreements between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) operator, Unicargas, Multiparques and the Luanda port authority were signed in the Angolan capital on Tuesday and provide for the concession and modernisation of the multipurpose terminal for a period of 20 years, extendable for a further ten, through a consortium.
In the initial phase, AD Ports will invest $251 million (€235 million) to modernise the terminal. Depending on market demand, this investment could increase to $410 million (€384 million) over the concession's term.
Angola's minister of transport, Ricardo Viegas Abreu, stressed that the agreements were the result of talks between the companies, which had already led to the signing of the terms of reference between the parties on 17 January 2023.
The Porto of Luanda handles more than 76% of the country's container and general cargo volumes.
"Fortunately, it is well placed to capture the expected growth in the country's container volumes, which are expected to increase at an average annual rate of 3.3% over the next decade," he said.
On the other hand, he added that this is one of the main transhipment centres for the countries of West Central Africa, allowing maritime trade access to landlocked African countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia.
Mohamed Eidha Tannaf Almenhali, regional director for Africa of the Abu Dhabi Ports group, said that the process "was very challenging but successful," securing a long-term concession for the operation of this terminal, and focussed on the "strong bilateral relationship" between Angola and the United Arab Emirates in recent years.
He also cited Angola's "great potential" in terms of logistical opportunities and said the terminal's remodelling should be completed by the third quarter of 2026.
The terminal's concession contract provides for the modernisation of the multi-purpose facilities and their transformation into a container and Ro-Ro terminal in an area of 192,000 square metres.
Container handling volumes are expected to increase from 25,000 TEUs to 350,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot container equivalent, meaning a 20-foot container is one TEU and a 40-foot container is two TEUs) and Ro-Ro volumes to more than 40,000 vehicles.
