Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Web Summit CEO Cosgrave expects new government to be just as committed

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, April 18, 2024 (Lusa) - Portugal's ambassador to Brazil told Lusa that the CEO of the Web Summit, Paddy Cosgrave, has told him that he expects the new Portuguese government to be just as committed to organising the event in Portugal as the previous one.
"He clearly told us that he would also like to see this new government committed to actively participating in the work of Web Summit Portugal," Luís Faro Ramos, who met with Paddy Cosgrave at the Web Summit in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, told Lusa on Wednesday.
According to the Portuguese diplomat, this year's Portuguese edition, which will be held in Lisbon from 11 to 14 November, will feature for the first time "a stage within the event that will enable politicians and ministers to speak to counterparts from other countries".
The aim, the Web Summit CEO told him, is that "the Portuguese government will participate more actively in the next edition of the Web Summit."
The Riocentro event in Barra da Tijuca, which ends today, has welcomed more than 30,000 participants from at least 100 countries, more than 1,000 startups, around 600 investors and 600 speakers, in a structure supported by more than 210 partners and 400 volunteers, according to the organisation.
On the Portuguese side, there are 31 startups linked to the areas of software solutions, metaverse, artificial intelligence and blockchain, among others, in a record turnout.
In the previous edition, 25 Portuguese startups participated in the event, making it the second-largest foreign delegation after the United States.
Cabo Verde is another of the Portuguese-speaking countries represented, with three startups taking part in the event taking place from the 15th to the 18th in Rio de Janeiro.
The technology event, which began in Ireland in 2010, moved to Lisbon's Parque das Nações area in 2016 and will remain in the Portuguese capital until 2028. In addition to Rio de Janeiro, the company has also expanded to the Middle East, with Web Summit Qatar taking place at the beginning of 2024.
