Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Platform for Portuguese speakers of African descent at Rio Web Summit

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, April 18, 2024 (Lusa) - The Portuguese online platform Bantumen, which provides information about people from black communities, is at the Web Summit in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro to unite people of African descent from all Portuguese-speaking countries, the founders told Lusa.
The project, which is an online magazine, emerged in 2015 with the mission of becoming "an information platform for black communities that are spread across the Portuguese-speaking world and the different diasporas", said co-founder Vanessa Sanches, on the sidelines of the technological event that is taking place until today in the 'marvellous city'.
The idea arose from the scarcity of information linked to the black community, which follows "paths of excellence in different areas" but has no voice in the traditional media, she explained.
The project, which is more than an online magazine, has become a cultural platform, for example by creating bridges to festivals in order to open doors to more diverse artists, explained Vanessa Sanches.
"Today we're already relevant in the PALOP" [Portuguese Language African Countries], emphasised the Portuguese afro-descendant, stating that now the mission is to "try to break the bubble in Brazil".
"Our audience here has grown immensely and this bubble is growing for one reason: Afro-Brazilians have a need to identify themselves, to understand what their roots are," she explained, replying straight away that "these roots come from Africa", more precisely from the PALOP.
"It's easy for them to identify with what we create," said the co-founder, whose platform has been a guest partner of the Web Summit for four years, both in Lisbon and in Brazil.
This identification has led Bantumen to create more and more content about people of African descent in Brazil.
Eddie Pipocas, co-founder, Angolan and of African descent living in Portugal, told Lusa that the platform is based in Portugal, but already has collaborators in practically all the PALOP countries and in Brazil.
As for the receptivity they felt at the Web Summit, Vanessa Sanches, who moderated two sessions at the event ("The essence of the global south: Rising as a benchmark for innovation, culture and technology" and "The role of technology in promoting and preserving Afro-descendant culture") felt she had received "a lot of information about what Brazil is doing".
But, on the other hand, she noticed some ignorance on the Brazilian side.
"They are completely unaware of this Portuguese-speaking world," she said, feeling that through more partnerships they will be able to help Brazil understand its roots.
The Rio Web Summit in Barra da Tijuca has welcomed more than 30,000 participants from at least 100 countries, more than 1,000 startups, around 600 investors and 600 speakers, in a structure supported by more than 210 partners and 400 volunteers, according to the organisers of the event, which began on Monday and ends today.
On the Portuguese side, there are 31 startups linked to the areas of software solutions, metaverse, artificial intelligence and blockchain, among others, in a record participation.
The technology event, which was born in Ireland in 2010, moved to Lisbon's Parque das Nações area in 2016 and will remain in the Portuguese capital until 2028.
In addition to Rio de Janeiro, the company also expanded to the Middle East, with Web Summit Qatar taking place at the beginning of 2024.
