Lusa - Business News - Angola: Brazil, China can help in agribusiness, food security sectors - minister

Washington, April.18,2024(Lusa) - The Angolan minister of finance told Lusa on Thursday that food security and agribusiness were the country's priorities for strengthening the economy, counting on the experience of Brazilian and Chinese businesspeople to make progress in this area.
Admitting to "great concern" about food security - which she considered to be a fundamental pillar of Angola's national development plan until 2027 - Vera Daves assessed that the great pressure on food prices and indicators is directly related to Angola's domestic production capacity.
The country "imports too much and exports too little," in a "vicious cycle" that is reflected in the general public's living conditions, said the minister in an interview with Lusa in Washington, on the sidelines of the 2024 Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
In recent years, "a great deal of investment has been made in family farming and we are beginning to see the results. We want to continue to invest in family farming, but also more and more in entrepreneurial farming," she said.
"Because we need scale and we need businesses that are structured enough so that we can close the 'gap' in terms of demand for food internally, and then eventually export to countries in the region," said Vera Daves.
The Angolan minister alluded to the resources and guarantees that are being put in place and provided through public financial institutions to boost business from an agribusiness point of view and indicated that the country is also looking for the experience of others.
"We have repeatedly invited, for example, Brazil and Brazilian entrepreneurs to join us, because we believe they are very strong in this field, (...) as well as Chinese entrepreneurs, also (...) very strong in this field. Just to cite two examples. Food safety is undoubtedly something we're working hard on," she said.
Brazil is one of the world's largest producers and exporters of agricultural commodities. Beijing, on the other hand, has renewed its agricultural policies, diversified agriculture and has been investing in new irrigation systems and protected cultivation, prioritising science, technology and innovation.
In addition to agriculture, the minister of finance has one of the main measures to strengthen the economy and improve the business environment this year in tourism.
"We believe that tourism has a lot of potential, especially in terms of job creation. Angola has a very young population that is growing by 3% a year and an unemployment rate, especially among young people, that requires a lot of attention and we want to focus on tourism in the near future," she said.
The minister pointed to the "difficult decision" to separate the minister for tourism from the minister for culture as an example of the importance being given to this sector, with the government committed to removing obstacles so that private investment takes place, tourism is boosted and jobs are created.
Despite admitting that bureaucracy is still a challenge in the country, Vera Daves referred to "petty corruption" as one of the problems to be solved, defending the fight from the "top to the bottom".
"There is an unequivocal commitment from President João Lourenço to fight corruption. The commitment has to come from all of us, so the fight has to be from the top down in order to exterminate petty corruption (...) so that anyone who wants to do business in Angola can do so with peace of mind, without having to worry about compensation for having the systems dealt with," she advocated.
She believes that if everyone is committed to this vision and this agenda, "certainly within a reasonable period of time," Angola will be "better for everyone, more inviting" and "everyone can be more prosperous.
