Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Government forecasts oil price to fall to $79.1 barrel this year

Lisbon, April.15,2024(Lusa) - The Portuguese government estimates that the price of oil this year will be around US$79.1 per barrel, down from US$82 in 2023, according to the Stability Programme (SP) delivered to parliament on Monday. In the document, for the 2024-2028 period, the executive emphasised that, "according to the expectations implicit in the futures markets, the price of oil should fall slightly" to around US$79.1 per barrel this year, compared to US$82 in 2023 "and continue this trend over the next few years".
Based on these expectations, the executive drew a scenario with a price of US$75.1 per barrel for 2025, falling consecutively to US$69.1 in 2028.
The government also analysed the effects of a 20% deviation in these estimates. "A scenario in which the price of oil is 20% higher than assumed in the base scenario would imply a negative effect of 0.2 p.p. [percentage points] on the volume growth of the GDP [Gross Domestic Product] in 2024, with this effect dissipating in the following years," it said.
According to the SP, the "impact in 2024 would essentially result in lower growth in private consumption and investment, partially mitigated by the decrease in imports", and "in this scenario, the private consumption deflator would be higher due to the increase in the import deflator and, to a lesser extent, the other components due to their import content".
Thus, it indicated, "this would lead to a reduction in nominal GDP of 0.3 p.p. in 2024, with this effect dissipating in the following years".
According to the government, "given the weight of oil-derived energy goods in imports, this shock would result in a deterioration of the trade balance and, consequently, of the economy's financing capacity by around 0.3 p.p. of GDP".
As for the labour market, the impact on the unemployment rate would be "residual in 2024", but with a slower rate of reduction in the unemployment rate in the following years, they add.
Finally, this shock "would translate into a slower rate of reduction in public debt as a percentage of GDP by 0.2 p.p. in 2024, essentially due to lower growth in nominal GDP", and "on the budget balance it would have a residual effect in 2024, with a worsening in the following years, essentially due to the growth in spending on social benefits".
