Lusa - Business News - Angola: Attack on opposition convoy 'sign of weakness' - bishops

Luanda, April 15, 2024 (Lusa) - The Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé (CEAST) on Monday expressed its concern at the violence against UNITA (Angolan opposition) members of parliament in Cuando-Cubango, considering the incident to be an expression of a process of "fragile reconciliation".
The Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace of CEAST said in a statement that the incident, which culminated in the wounding of nine militants from the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA, the largest opposition party), five of whom were seriously injured, "tarnishes" the celebrations of 22 years of peace, marked on 4 April.
For CEAST, which called on all the parties involved to do everything possible to mitigate the negative impact of Friday's violent event, "it is an expression of a fragile reconciliation process, where hatred stemming from the war era tends to resurface".
Behind this "serious attack" lies the "possibility of a political instigation, which persists in the logic of hatred towards their former adversaries, which could give rise to a dangerous climate for the peace that we thought was moving in the right direction, 22 years after it was achieved," the statement said.
"If our fears are confirmed, we will be facing a fragile peace, under threat of sudden outbreaks of violence that could disturb the climate of tranquillity that has already been achieved," CEAST noted.
The Catholic bishops also called on all men and women of goodwill to refrain from participating in any plans to target opponents for political or other reasons.
Resorting to violent means to achieve certain ends, they emphasised, "however noble they may be, are in themselves a weakness for those who use them".
"This is why we recommend the use of dialogue, other mechanisms of consultation, and legally provided means to overcome differences of any kind between groups or citizens," added CEAST's Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace.
The Cuando-Cubango police confirmed that four people were injured in an attack on a convoy of UNITA MPs on Friday but denied that the party had asked the authorities for an escort.
On Friday, UNITA denounced an attack on a caravan of MPs carrying out parliamentary work in the province, which resulted in one death and six injuries, information that was initially corrected to nine injuries, five of which were serious, as well as damage to vehicles.
The perpetrators were allegedly militants from the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), which has been in power in Angola since 1975, according to the leader of UNITA's parliamentary group, Liberty Chiaca.
