Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: Hotels break accommodation records

Praia, March.27,2024 (Lusa) - Cabo Verde's hotels broke the record for guests in 2023, surpassing one million, the National Statistics Institute (INE) announced on Wednesday .
The year ended with 1,010,739 guests, who made 5,150,806 overnight stays, i.e. increases of 20.9% and 26.0%, respectively, compared to 2022. The figures also exceed the pre-pandemic figures: "compared to 2019, there was a growth of 23.4% in the number of guests" and "an increase of 0.7%" in the number of overnight stays.
The United Kingdom remained the main country of origin of tourists in 2023, "but Romanians stood out with the longest stay in Cabo Verde, with an average stay of 6.5 nights". The island of Sal continues to be the most sought-after island, accounting for 57.1% of arrivals at hotel establishments. Guests stayed an average of five nights in hotels and the average bed occupancy rate was 52%.
The figures for hotels are in line with those for tourist arrivals, announced by the tourism minister in an interview with Lusa in February, when Carlos Santos announced that Cabo Verde would set a new record for visitors, with more than 900,000 tourists in 2023.
Forecasts point to sustained growth in tourism in Cabo Verde, provided there is investment in accommodation and other infrastructure to meet demand.
Internationally, the aim is to "consolidate" the European markets, which account for more than 90% of tourists travelling to the archipelago, but also to attract visitors from African and American countries, such as Brazil and the United States.
Tourism, a sector responsible for around 25% of Cabo Verde's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), is centred on the islands of Sal and Boavista.
