Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Union, boss differ on strike take up at Neves-Corvo copper, zinc mine

Castro Verde, Beja, Portugal, March 26, 2024 (Lusa) - Workers at Somincor, the concessionaire of the Neves-Corvo mine in Portugal's Castro Verde district (Beja), are holding the first of two days of general strike action on Tuesday, with the union and the company differing on participation figures.
Speaking to the Lusa news agency, the leader of the mining industry workers' union (STIM), Albino Pereira, gave a "positive" assessment of the strike, revealing that until 08:00 it had "a good turnout".
Albino Pereira said that, in the first shift, the strike was supported by around "half" of the staff working at the bottom of the mine, while in the surface teams "approximately 30%" of the workers were out on strike.
Contacted by Lusa, an official Somincor source revealed that, according to the company's attendance records, strike take-up "was 9.6%".
The general strike at the four daily shifts at the Neves-Corvo mine was approved by the workers in a plenary session earlier this month and will last until 8am on Thursday.
In the strike notice submitted, STIM demanded wage increases of €150 and "all other matters of monetary terms", namely bonuses and long hours, and improvements to professional careers and automatic promotions.
Taking measures to safeguard the life, health and physical and psychological integrity of workers was another demand made of the company.
Speaking to Lusa on 13 March, the STIM leader said that in 2024 Somincor only granted "a 4.3% increase [in salaries], which in no way corresponds to what was demanded" by the workers, as well as "barring any negotiations".
On the same day, Somincor's managing director, António Salvador, considered that the 4.3% increase in wages was "above the national average and well above the average for the national mining sector".
According to the manager, the mining company is facing "an economic and financial situation of great difficulty", motivated by "strong inflationary pressure on costs, the devaluation of base metal prices on international markets and the devaluation of the dollar", the reference currency for the sale of metals.
Therefore, he added to Lusa, "this increase is what is possible within this context and any other scenario irremediably jeopardises the company's financial sustainability and Somincor's continued local, regional and national status, which is certainly what we all want".
Owned by the Swedish-Canadian multinational Lundin Mining, Somincor is the concessionaire of the Neves-Corvo mine, which mainly produces copper and zinc concentrates, as well as silver and lead, and where around 2,000 people work.
Last year, a total of 108,812 tonnes of zinc and 33,823 tonnes of copper were produced at Neves-Corvo, according to the 2023 production report and outlook for the three-year period 2024-2026 released by Lundin Mining.
In addition to Neves-Corvo, the multinational based in Toronto (Canada) also owns the Candelaria and Caserones mines (both in Chile), Chapada (Brazil), Josemaria (Argentina), Eagle (United States) and Zinkgruvan (Sweden).
