Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Time for Europe to 'reap the benefits' - Centeno

Lisbon, Dec. 14(Lusa)– The Portuguese finance minister and recently-elected president of the Eurogroup, Mário Centeno, said on Thursday it was time to “reap the benefits” of the effort made during the crisis years and to conclude the banking union.
Speaking to TV channel CNBC, in Lisbon, Centeno told European citizens that after the crisis it was now time to reap the benefits.
With the return of growth and new political cycles in various member states, he said there was a window of opportunity to expand the integration of the euro zone and that the banking union had to be concluded.
Concluding the banking union means something slightly different for each member of the Eurogroup. We have to try and concentrate on the common ground that we certainly have, he said, adding that any reforms in the euro zone “need time and patience”.
Asked about the possibility of various speeds in Europe in implementing the measures, Mr Centeno said progress had to be made.
He said that the exit of the UK from the 28 would be a major challenge as it was a negative shock for all the economies involved and it would have to be seen as a structural reform.
