Lusa - Business News - Macau: Tourism agreements with Portugal can extend to Great Bay - government

Macau, China, May 15, 2019 (Lusa) – Macau’s government on Wednesday announced that the agreements signed with Portugal in the fields of education, training and tourism can be extended to the cities of the Great Bay, a Chinese metropolis with about 70 million inhabitants.
The agreements signed on Tuesday, between Portugal’s secretary of state for tourism, Ana Mendes Godinho, and Macau’s secretary for social affairs, Alexis Tam, “aim to promote the joint development of training actions and dual graduation programmes, as well as encouraging the reciprocal participation in workshops, seminars, conferences, meetings, colloquia, researches and other projects of common interest,” Macau’s authorities announced on Wednesday in a statement.
According to the same note, these joint programmes may “be open to students from across Great Bay Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau.”
The Great Bay is a Beijing project to create a world metropolis that joins the special administrative regions of Macau and Hong Kong and nine Chinese cities of the province of Guangdong (Dongguan, Foshan, Guangzhou, Huizhou, Jiangmen, Shenzhen, Zhaoqing, Zhongshan and Zhuhai), in a region with about 70 million inhabitants and a Gross domestic product (GDP) of about $1.3 billion, greater than the GDP of Australia, Indonesia and Mexico, countries that are part of the Group of Twenty (G-20).
These agreements were signed during a forum, which took place in Estoril, near Lisbon, and focused on “the impact of the development of the Great Bay project in the fields of tourism and education,” Macau’s authorities said.
On the day of the signing of the memorandum, Godinho told Lusa that this agreement will lead to the creation of a Macau Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT) hub in Estoril.
“We are going to have the IFT Macau hub there for human resources training in the area of tourism, mainly Asian human resources, which will have a space for training and articulation and development of internships here in Portugal as well, namely with Portuguese hotels,” Godinho told Lusa.
Godinho said she believes that this agreement will work “as a gateway to the Asian market.”
