Lusa - Business News - Portugal: 'Rapid intervention plan' started after mortar falls off Porto bridge

Porto, 15 May, 2019 (LUSA) – Portugal’s Ministry of Infrastructures said on Wednesday that it is monitoring the situation on the Ponte da Arrábida bridge in Porto as a "rapid intervention plan" is being implemented after mortar fell from the structure onto a road below.
In a statement, the ministry said it was working with state company Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP), which oversees bridges and other major infrastructure.
Experts from IP have been on site and have confirmed that the material that came off is only surface mortar, with this now to be made good.
"In the meantime, it will also be possible to assess what intervention the situation requires in terms of normal maintenance and conservation interventions," the statement adds, stressing that "there is no structural damage to the bridge, so its stability and security is not at risk. "
In a separate statement, Porto city council said that IP "is currently drawing a rapid maintenance intervention plan for the Ponte de Arrábida". The council had closed the part of a road running along the north bank the Douro that passes under the bridge after pieces of mortar fell onto it on Tuesday night.
The council also states that, according to IP, "there is no relationship between these superficial detachments [of mortar] and any structural phenomena that could compromise the bridge".
Nevertheless, the council is to maintain the suspension of traffic along the road while IP carries out the repair work.
According to the council the bridge, which was built in 1963, has over the decades been subjected to regular maintenance by the state, its owner. However, "events of mortar detaching itself happen sometimes in this type of structure due to various phenomena such as temperature changes."
According to information available on the council’s website, its civil defence service swung immediately into action, using a drone to diagnose the cause of the mortar falling onto the road, which prompted the road closure.
The bridge, which connects Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia, has been a national monument since 2013.
