Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Country needs €2.8B to recover from cyclones Idai and Kenneth

Maputo, May 14, 2019 (Lusa) – Mozambique’s government is to ask for $3.2 billion (€2.8 billion) from the donor countries to support reconstruction works in the areas affected by cyclones Idai and Kenneth, the cabinet announced on Tuesday.
“The global assessment points to a budget of $3.2 billion to address the needs of social and productive sectors and also infrastructures,” the government’s representative Ana Comoana said in a news conference after the weekly cabinet meeting.
Out of that amount, over $3 billion (€2.6 billion) will be used to recover from the damages caused by Cyclone Idai, which hit Central Mozambique in March, and the rest will cover the losses caused by Cyclone Kenneth, in April, in the northern region.
“This report was made with the help of our partners in the European Union and the United Nations,” she added.
The amount will be explained to the international donors at a conference scheduled for 31 May in the city of Beira, the worst affected by Cyclone Idai.
“We believe most of the money can be offered by our international partners,” Comoana said.
Over 700 businessmen and politicians are expected to attend the conference in Beira.
Cyclone Idai hit central Mozambique in March, killing 603 people and affecting 1.5 million, while Cyclone Kenneth hit the north in April, killed 45 people and affected 250,000.
