Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Special fund to help companies after Cyclone Idai

Maputo, Apr. 22, 2019 (Lusa) - Two Mozambican institutions on Monday announced the creation of a Special Fund for the rehabilitation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) following Cyclone Idai with a capital of 52 million meticais (€719,000).
The initiative is organised by the Foundation for the Improvement of the Business Environment (FAN) and by the Gapi Investment Society to contribute to the “relaunch of the social and economic life of the central region of Mozambique,” the statement said.
The fund provided for the granting of credit to subsidised interest rates, as well as technical assistance “so that the affected companies can rise again.”
The support is to be granted “in coordination with the public authorities mandated to direct the reconstruction programme,” already announced by state organisations.
The target is the small and medium-sized enterprises that generate sustainable jobs and aim to achieve an “improvement in the income of economically active people.”
“FAN is very motivated to participate in this collective effort for a normal life of Mozambican businesses, in the areas affected by Cyclone Idai,” Leonardo Simão, chairman of FAN, said in a statement.
The Gapi chairman, Luís Sitoe, said that the partnership with FAN was established “at the right moment and will contribute to boosting the valences of the two institutions to provide more robust responses to the challenges of economic and social development.”
Idai, which also swept through Malawi and Zimbabwe, claimed 603 lives and affected more than 1.5 million people in Mozambique, according to the authorities.
